Nishijuku Puppet Theater, a local performing art in Higashimurayama

We have special seats available for the Nishijuku Puppet Theater, a local performing art active in Higashimurayama City. All of the Bunraku puppets, stage sets, props, and scripts were created by the troupe's members, and you will be captivated by the delicate expressions. The program will include "Taiheiki," set in Higashimurayama City, and "Kaomise," a condensed performance of five plays. This program is easy to understand and enjoyable for anyone, making it a suitable introduction to appreciating classical Japanese culture.

Shofukuji Temple Jizo Festival (Once a year! The interior of the Jizo Hall is open to the public)

This Rinzai sect temple in Higashimurayama City is home to the Shofukuji Jizo Hall, Tokyo's only National Treasure building. The wooden Jizo Hall is beautifully constructed in the Zen Buddhist style, and inside it is enshrined a statue of Jizo Bodhisattva and many smaller Jizo statues, earning it the nickname "The Hall of 1,000 Jizos." This tour will be held once a year on the day the interior of the Jizo Hall is open to the public. Don't miss the offering of "Urayasu no Mai," a gagaku (traditional Japanese court music) performance designated as an intangible folk cultural asset by the city, the sale of small Jizo statues to ward off evil, and the sale of freshly picked local vegetables, specialty products, and regional cuisine!
