This Rinzai sect temple in Higashimurayama City is home to the Shofukuji Jizo Hall, Tokyo's only National Treasure building. The wooden Jizo Hall is beautifully constructed in the Zen Buddhist style, and inside it is enshrined a statue of Jizo Bodhisattva and many smaller Jizo statues, earning it the nickname "The Hall of 1,000 Jizos." This tour will be held once a year on the day the interior of the Jizo Hall is open to the public. Don't miss the offering of "Urayasu no Mai," a gagaku (traditional Japanese court music) performance designated as an intangible folk cultural asset by the city, the sale of small Jizo statues to ward off evil, and the sale of freshly picked local vegetables, specialty products, and regional cuisine!
